EXPERIENCE
JUNE 2019 – PRESENT
SENIOR COMMUNICATION OFFICER, VETERANS AFFAIRS CANADA, OTTAWA, ONTARIO
I work with subject matter experts and communications colleagues in developing strategies and content to inform Canadians about the services available to Canada’s Veterans. Products include web and social media posts, news releases, questions and answers, media lines and other materials.

JULY 2017 – JUNE 2019
CONTENT SPECIALIST – PAY SUPPORT, FISHERIES AND OCEANS CANADA, OTTAWA, ONTARIO
Working in a busy, deadline-driven environment to provide executive briefings and communications products to address one of the Government of Canada’s most challenging files, I created PowerPoint presentations, web articles, speaking notes, briefings and communications plans and products. I developed relationships with subject matter experts within and outside of my team, and drafted correspondence for the Minister and email responses for the Deputy to address the pay complaints of employees. Additionally, I designed and maintained a bi-weekly briefing document for use by our most senior executives.

FEBRUARY 2010 – JULY 2017
INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS ADVISOR, MINISTERIAL SPEECH WRITER, FISHERIES AND OCEANS CANADA, OTTAWA, ONTARIO
As a Ministerial speech writer, I researched and prepared speeches and print messages for the Minister and Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. Notably, I prepared a series of “tag team” speeches for four regional ministers to announce the introduction of a new Hero Class of search and rescue vessels. Transitioning to internal communications, I created strategies and written materials for mental health, workplace wellness and respectful workplace initiatives. In addition, I edited a weekly internal online newsletter and regional news releases.

SEPTEMBER 2004 – FEBRUARY 2010
COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGIST, ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE, OTTAWA, ONTARIO
I provided corporate communications support to Canada’s national police service, including change communications and writing services for the Commissioner. I wrote and executed a communications strategy that was acknowledged as helping the RCMP improve the response rate for its annual employee survey by 50%. I wrote numerous articles for the RCMP’s internal magazine, The Pony Express. I proactively prepared speeches and employee messages for the Commissioner to acknowledge deaths in service and for internal and external events ranging from international conferences to change of command ceremonies and regimental dinners. During the RCMP’s change-management project, I wrote speeches, articles, communications plans, and more to promote organizational change.

AUGUST 2002 – SEPTEMBER 2004
COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER, PUBLIC SAFETY CANADA, AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD CANADA, OTTAWA, ONTARIO
In these term positions, I researched and wrote speeches for the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Secretary of State for Rural Affairs, and the Deputy Minister. I also edited and oversaw approvals, French translation and distribution of various products of interest to Canada’s critical infrastructure and emergency management communities, and edited and advised incident analysts and other colleagues on matters of style and grammar.
